At Wick and Greene we always offer the best quality in jewelry and design and welcome any questions you may have. Here is a brief overview of some of the essential precious metals you will see in our fine jewelry.

Platinum
Platinum is an extremely rare gray-white precious metal and takes its place as one of the favorite precious metals used for fine jewelry not only because of its rarity, but also because of its structural integrity over time (it is a very dense metal). For instance, the shape of a ring made from platinum will never change or shift from being worn. This makes it an ideal engagement and wedding band choice. If you see a scratch on your platinum jewelry, an interesting fact is that there is no actual metal removed by the scratch -rather it is merely displaced. Bring it in to us and we can polish it away for you. It is also hypoallergenic and 90-95% pure!
Gold
Gold comes in various forms and colors – you may see that your jewelry is stamped 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, or even 24K (pure gold). This measurement refers to what karat the gold is or how pure it is, as gold is alloyed with other metals. It is traditionally available in white or yellow gold, but may also be available as rose, green-yellow, black and even chocolate gold. It does not scratch easily though it is possible to slightly bend due to how malleable it is. The lower the karat of gold, the harder it is due to more and more non-precious alloys being added. Gold has been a classic precious metal used throughout history around the world and is the most popular metal used to this day.
Palladium
Palladium is a lesser-known precious metal with several fine characteristics that have made it increasingly popular. It is a cool, bright gray-white metal that is comparably pure to platinum (95%) and equally as rare. Its major difference from platinum is that it is less dense and therefore lighter in weight. It is also less expensive than platinum and gold and is about as hard as gold. It is widely used in Europe.
