Tired of the hectic New York City lifestyle, founder Mr. E.O. Wick
arrived in Asheville in 1926 from Tiffany's to open a small jewelry
repair shop. With his considerable skills as an expert enamellist,
hand engraver, and jeweler, he began to serve the needs of Asheville
and Western North Carolina.
As his business grew, Mr. Wick took on an apprentice, current owner
Paul Greene, who began working 7 days a week side by side with Mr.
Wick. Paul, eager to learn from a master jeweler, dedicated himself
to mastering the skills Mr. Wick had perfected. Today, Paul Greene
is renowned for his creative pieces of jewelry and is one of the
few individuals still practicing the nearly-lost art of hand engraving.
In 1948, Paul Greene married Lucia Brown and she immediately took
a vested interest in the business. With impeccable taste and a love
for fine jewelry, she has worked next to Paul for over 50 years
in many different capacities. Today, she is responsible for accounting
and administration.
By 1953, E.O. Wick made Paul Greene a partner in the business,
then run out of a small office on Wall Street. Together they worked
to expand the business, but remained committed to offering the vast
selection of high quality jewelry and superior service to Western
North Carolina that had made Mr. Wick so successful. Sadly, Mr.
Wick died in 1959 but his legacy continued through the efforts of
Paul and Lucia. Mr. Wick's name was retained in honor of Paul's
mentor.
In 1975, Paul's son Michael graduated from Wake Forest University
and joined the family business. For nearly 30 years, he has worked
at the side of his father, learning from his many talents and developing
the skills of a master jeweler. Michael also furthered his education
by becoming a Graduate Gemologist with the Gemological Institute
of America, a Registered Jeweler, a Certified Gemologist and a Certified
Gemologist Appraiser with the American Gem Society. He has won numerous
awards, such as the coveted DeBeers Diamonds Today award, recognizing
his exceptional talents in original design.
In 1988, Wick and Greene moved from its small location on Wall
Street to an old Shell service station on Patton Avenue that was
beautifully restored and remodeled into a jewelry store. Recognized
on the National Registry of Historic Places, the new location provided
an area large enough to display the company's vast inventory, while
adding to the art deco theme of downtown Asheville. A 1920 Seth
Thomas Street Clock was also restored and prominently placed in
the front of the store, a proud beacon to the rich history of Wick
& Greene Jewelers. It is now one of Asheville's most recognizable
landmarks.
Wick and Greene Jewelers continues to build on their legacy of
superior service and innovative products to Asheville and the world.
In addition to its award-winning original pieces, the store carries
many popular name brands such as Hearts on Fire, Lazare Kaplan,
Mikimoto, Omega and Faberge. The store is also well known for its
quality diamonds, wide selection of unusual colored gem stones,
and estate jewelry.
